An Empty Heart

A pit in my chest,
A dagger pressing into my heart,
Compressing my breath,
Can you feel how I feel?

The pain of being lonely,
It hurts even more than when you're alone,
Giving after you have nothing to give,
Smiling while you're miserable.

Knowing you'll never be heard, loved, or cared,
And your dreams are smashed,
Anything you want is last on your partner's list,
Money pays the bills, but it doesn't fill the heart.

I need time, attention, smile, and warmth,
I wait an open ear and a kind word,
A shoulder to lean on and a loving heart,
Only these will fill up an empty spirit!
